Continents and Oceans Interactive Notebook

We have accumulated and created so many things for our Continents and Oceans theme, it was time to condense some things and make it a bit more "kid-friendly".  Instead of making our Continents and Oceans lessons a "writing/paper/pencil" activity, we thought it would be good to just have the kids focus on one key fact about each of the continents and oceans.  Using this format, student would just be building the one key fact we would like them to remember about each of the continents or oceans.

The lesson sequence I plan to use for each continent and ocean lesson:

  • Gather students on carpet for read-aloud
  • Continent Mini-Books or Ocean Mini-Books (you can find them in my TPT store)
  • Continent or Oceans song (you can find them in my TPT store HERE)
  • View PPT slides on each to learn facts
  • Brainstorm facts about each of the continents using the mimio for recall of details
  • Build the cut-apart sentence in interactive notebook

How to Use this Interactive Notebook:  You can purchase it HERE.
  • After reading your favorite read aloud book about each of the continents/oceans, watching videos, and brainstorming facts they remember, have your students piece together the fact for each continent or ocean. Then have them color the black line illustrations.

How to Assemble:
  • Copy single sided or double sided and staple on the left hand size.
  • Copy the words that will be glued in the book separately. There are three on each page. Only hand out the sentence your students need.

Cut-Apart Sentences Included for Interactive Notebook:

  • Australia: Australia is called the Land Down Under.
  • Antarctica: People cannot live in Antarctica because it is too cold.
  • Asia: Asia is the biggest continent in the whole world.
  • North America: North America is made up of mostly three countries.
  • South America: There are rain forests in South America.
  • Africa: The Sahara Desert is in Africa.
  • Europe: Europe is the smallest continent, and it is made up of many small countries.
  • Southern Ocean: The Southern Ocean is around Antarctica.
  • Arctic Ocean: The Arctic Ocean is by the North Pole.
  • Indian Ocean: The Indian Ocean is the warmest ocean.
  • Pacific Ocean: The Pacific Ocean is the biggest ocean.
  • Atlantic Ocean: The Atlantic Ocean was the first ocean to be crossed by ship.

Continents and Oceans Songs

Well, as always I end up creating something to go along with a unit and don't finish it until the unit is done and over...so I guess I will have these songs for next year!  Finished these "Continents and Oceans" themed song posters on a Friday night sitting in the living room with my family.  They all thought I was pretty goofy dictating (talk to text) and singing into my iPad.

There is a song for each continent and ocean, and follow a catchy tune (I'm a Little Teapot, Home on the Range, Scooby Doo, Flinstones, If You're Happy and You Know It, The Wheels on the Bus, etc.) to help teach a few key details about each of the places on planet earth.

You can find this song set HERE at my TPT store.

Continents and Oceans Review Packet

Our Continents and Oceans theme is coming up and I decided to get creative again.  I thought we had enough stuff to go along with our theme, but when you LOVE to create...its hard to stop making!  And there are so many people that have purchased my continents/oceans stuff, so I know there's a demand for them...the ideas just keep blooming!  It's also nice to pick and choose each year what to use and what not to use.  I hate it when things get redundant.

I wanted something to use as an end of unit assessment. 1 fact from each continent and ocean is highlighted upon, giving your young learners something to remember for each continent and ocean.  The retelling sheets have three options available to make it developmentally appropriate for the ages and abilities of your students.

Continents and Oceans Writing Retell Sheets
3 options available:
--Students write sentences to match the pictures
--Students write the missing continent or ocean name in the shape box font.
--Student traces the continent or ocean name within the sentence.

Continents and Oceans Fact Cards: BW and Color Options
--Print, laminate, and cut out to use as pocket chart cards or review for learning 1 facts about each continent or ocean.
-Use the black and white version to create a mini-book.

Check out these other activities I have created that go along with the Continents and Oceans theme in my TPT store:  Click HERE to take you to all my Continents and Oceans themed activities I have at my TPT store.

Continents & Oceans What I Learned Book

Just finished this "what I learned" book for our Continents and Oceans theme that we will do in the winter.  I created one of these for our Animal Habitats theme and our Space theme and the kids really seemed to like them.  Having the picture at the bottom as an illustration help them focus on what they were writing about.  And giving them handwriting lines with the numbers 1-3 for how many facts to write/remember helped keep them organized.

You can find this at my TPT store HERE.

Continents and Oceans I Have Who Has Game

Well, I decided to make the Continents and Oceans I Have Who Has Game after making the one for Space.  I love playing what I call "circle" games (it seems like everyone else in the world calls them "I Have Who Has" games).  I call them circle games because they make a complete circle and go back to the start card if they were read correctly.

I used the words from the "My World World Wall" pocket chart cards for this game.  I figured it would be good to have the words displayed in the pocket chart for students to refer to.  I also used the same picture clue.

This game includes cards for:
7 continents
5 oceans
North and South Pole
equator
globe
Earth
compass rose
world map
ocean water
continents

You can find this game HERE at my TPT store.

If you like the "My World Doodles" digital clip art used in this set it is available at my TPT, too.

Continents Mini Books Set: 7 Emergent Readers

We are just starting our of study of the Earth and learning about the continents and oceans. To beef up this unit, I created some easy to read mini books to use with my first graders. One of the activities we have our 1st graders do after hearing about, listening to stories, and watching short video clips about each of the continents is write three facts they can remember about each continent in their Continent and Oceans journal packet. I wanted something for them to refer back to that they could read independently.

You can purchase this set of beginning/easy readers HERE at my TPT store.  Continue reading below to see the words to each book.  Picutures on each page should help the reader figure out the words to the text.

Thes last few months of school are my favorite months!  Space and Planets, Continents and Oceans, Weather and the World Around Us, and Animal Habitats.  Lots of fun themes to cover.  I've been writing a few mini-books to go along with our themes that I am hoping my firsties will enjoy and be able to read independently.

Here are the words to the story:
There are 7 continents in the world.
North America is made of three countries.
There are a lot of rain forests in South America.
There are many small countries in Europe.
Asia is the biggest continent.

Continents and Oceans Vocabulary Book

I think we have a whole month before we are going to do our Continents and Oceans theme, but I'm trying to stay ahead of the game.  In the past we've pieced together some things that we had found to make a continents and oceans packet, and I just wasn't really happy with it.  Call me OCD, but I like to have things look neat and tidy...all the same font, same type of clip art, you know...Now that I have all my own clip art that I've drawn over the last year, I wanted to update it a bit in more first grade friendly terms.  This will be a shared read, as I'm not sure our firsties will be independent at reading all the information by themselves.

In this vocabulary book, students will learn the names of all the continents and oceans, as well as a few facts about each.  I also wanted to put a little bit of a focus on the different habitats on each of the continents so students can see how the world is such a different place.  This will be a great way to lead into our Animal Habitats unit we do after that, as one of the projects in this Continents and Oceans unit is to create a world map where they add an animal that is from each continent.

I left the continent and ocean names out and replaced it with my shape boxes font, so students can have a visual of what word should go there.  They can use the word bank on the first page to help them find the word.  Or...they can utilize the word wall pocket chart cards to find and write the correct word.  You can find my "MY World Word Wall Cards" HERE.

You can find this vocabulary book HERE at my TPT store.

MY WORLD Word Wall cards

My World World Wall Cards:
This packet includes word wall cards that you can hang on your wall, put in your writing center, or display in your thematic word wall pocket chart.   Each word wall card includes an illustration to give your early writers and readers a visual clue to help them read the words. Using a pocket chart word wall makes your word wall interactive.  Our first graders have loved it this year!  We change the theme words as we change each theme.

Words included:
Afria, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America, Earth, globe, compase rose, ocean, world map, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic ocean, Southern Ocean, continent, equator, North Pole, South Pole

My World Doodles clip art and FREEBIE Globe!

Yesterday I promised myself I woudn't started doodling...but I broke that promise and I DID!  I have so many ideas going through my head, and it didn't help that I made a list on Saturday of everything I want to draw.  I have completely neglected my house.  I've been planning to mop the floor all weekend, but that has gotten pushed to the back of my "To Do" list.  I WILL get to that today!  Today is the last day of our Easter/Spring break...so its gotta get done!

In the last few weeks, Christine and I have been busy making and revamping some of our stuff from our Continents unit.  We had to search for clip art to make a lot of the things we used in our classroom.  We just weren't finding any thing "cute" or just what we wanted.  I've never really found anyone that makes a "continents" themed clip art pack, so I decided to try and draw my own world/continents images...and this is what I came up with:

Here is a FREEBIE of the globe that I drew:
You can purchase this clip art bundle for $2.50 at my Etsy Shop:  http://www.etsy.com/listing/97236990/my-world-doodles-clip-art-combo-pack.

It is also available on Teacher's Notebook:  Clip Art by Carrie

You can find it HERE at our TPT store.

Thanks for looking at my clip art.  I would love your feedback!  Please see terms of use at the bottom of the blog page for using my clip art for personal and commercial use.

Continents and Oceans Journal Pages

Why does it seem like you always think of things to create AS you are teaching a unit or shortly after?  Afterschool today thought of making journal pages for each of the continents and oceans that students could use for journal time.  This year we just had the kids write about the continents and oceans in their writing journals.  We thought this would give them another visual as to where it is on the map!

If you are interested in purchasing these journal pages, head on over to our TPT store HERE and check out the free preview pages.  Please leave us feedback if you purchase this...we would REALLY appreciate it!

For those of you who have been following our post, these journal pages would go along great with our Continents Fact Generator posters found HERE at our TPT store.

Thanks again for stopping at our blog!
