Turkey Disguises Doodles

Last year just before doing our annual Turkey Disguises activity I whipped up some clip art for turkey clothing stencils to use with my first graders.  I printed, cut out and laminated the clothing pieces for them to use for stencils as they "disguise" their turkeys.  It helped them add their turkey costumes with construction paper.  I used them again this year. (Wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it was something better than what we've done in the past.)

But then one day this week, I was without my mimio (AHHHH!) and couldn't do what I had planned (we were playing a Roll-A-Dice Draw a Turkey game), so I had the kids do a step by step on how to draw a turkey on the white board with them doing the same on their white boards.  Well, that was SOOOOO much fun for my class.  They loved it.  They learned about adding details and how to fit the parts together.  Great!

Here's a picture of the turkey I drew with my first graders on the white board:

Well....That led to me drawing it on my iPad that night, which also led me to revamping my turkey clothing clip art.  So I guess I will have a bit more pieces for next years Turkey Disguises activity.

You can find this Turkey Disguises Doodles HERE at my TPT store.  Or HERE at my Teacher's Notebook shop.

Thanksgiving Story I Have Who Has

Oh my, has it been a while since I've felt creative.  I have had a BUSY first quarter of school and finally have a day off because of conferences this week.  Leave it to me to use it as a "catch-up" day for school stuff and ideas that need to be put into motion!

We just started our Thanksgiving theme this week and I realized we didn't have a I HAVE WHO HAS for this theme.  The kids LOVE these games, and I thought this one would be good to make because it can be used to retell the story from England to Thanksgiving today.

You can find this HERE at my TPT store.

And on another note:  I have reached 1000 followers at my TPT store!  Wow!  I never thought that would happen.  As a big thank you for following my blog, Pinterest, Facebook, TN, and TPT, the first 5 people who comment with their email below will get this for FREE.  Let's see how many people actually check out my blog...this will be interesting!  If you aren't one of the first 5 people, thanks for stopping by anyway!

I'm also throwing a 20% off sale to celebrate this milestone at my TPT store.  Get everything 20% of Sunday, November 9th thru Wednesday, November 12th.

And Happy Thanksgiving!

First Thanksgiving Story Retelling Packet

This week we finish up our Pumpkins and Halloween theme activities and Friday starts our November Thanksgiving theme.  This has to be one of my FAVORITE themes to teach about and I LOVE making new things to use with my first graders.  Maybe because a lot of the things I've made use my very first clip art set I ever put together.

This packet I just put together includes three different options for writing to retell the Thanksgiving story:

  • Students write their own sentences to match the picture clues.
  • Students write the missing vocabulary words in the shape boxes to match the picture.
  • Students trace the vocabulary word in the picture.
It also includes a First Thanksgiving Cut Apart Story, where students read the simple text and use the picture clues to put the story back in the correct order.

And finally a set of pocket chart cards that can be printed, laminated and cut apart to use in a pocket chart to display the story  or you could staple together to have a color mini book for students to read.

You can find this HERE at my TPT store.

Thanksgiving Story: What I Learned

This writing response journal can be used to assess students knowlege of the Thanksgiving story or as a "what I learned" after a a mini lesson you teach about the story.  Students use the picture clues to write their sentences and can color the sentences when they are finished writing.  My students just LOVE these books.  For first graders it is helpful to have a picture prompt to help them remember important details they can include in their writing.

You can purchae this HERE at my TPT store.

How To Make a Pumpkin Pie Writing FREEBIE

Wow!  Thanksgiving break is here.  YAY!!!!!  But where did November go?  What a jam-packed month.  So many fun activities and not enough time to do it all.  Well, we say good-bye to our Thanksgiving theme and move on to our North Pole-Christmas theme that starts next week.  One of the biggest projects we do is our Holiday Cookbook as a gift to our parents.  Students get to write a recipe in their own words on how they think their favorite food is made.  Each year is scares the you-know-what out of us as we start modeling the activity and have the kids think of the step by step process of making something.  It's like pulling teeth out or pulling your hair out stressful, but when its done, its amazingly cool.  And then you have this sense of accomplishment and think, "Oh, yeah.  It wasn't THAT bad."

This year I we tried to prep our kids a little bit during our Pumpkins theme by doing a "How to Carve a Pumpkin" writing.  You can pick up that FREEBIE at our TPT store HERE.  We modeled this with the whole class and then had the kids do it on their own.  It gave a pretty good picture of who is going to need the most in-depth help during the cookbook writing.

During our Thanksgiving theme, we came up with a "How to Make a Pumpkin Pie" writing activity.  Since there were SO many Thanksgiving activities to do in Novemer we didn't actually have the kids do the writing on their own for this one, but just did a class writing on the Mimio.  The students used the pictures to help them think about the steps for making a homemade pumpkin pie.  After we finished the class writing on the Mimio one of my students asked if we could find a video of someone making a pumpkin pie...so I jumped on that opportunity.  What a great way to check and see how accurate we were at writing the steps (since I've never in my life made a homemade pumpkin pie).  As we watched the video, I would pause every so often for students to check back and see if we were right.  They thought this was pretty neat.

So...next week when we start the dreaded Holiday Cookbook, I am hoping my students are a little big more prepared....and that I'm not pulling my hair out.

Grab your FREEBIE "How to Make a Pumpkin Pie" writing activity HERE at our TPT store.  We would love your feedback.  Thanks for stopping into our blog...and hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Skip Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s

Our first graders REALLY liked the Pumpkin Skip Counting activities we made this year to use for our Pumpkin theme, so Christine thought we should create some Thanksgiving ones, too.  Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s seems to be one of the main goals in first grade Everyday Math.  Counting by 5s and 10s helps children later when they are learning and practicing counting coins.

Here is the Thanksgiving Skip Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s activity.  You can find it HERE at our TPT store.  Let us know what you think.  Maybe for Christmas we can make Help Santa Deliver the Presents skip counting??!!

"The Thanksgiving Story" mini-book and FREEBIES

HERE is mini-book we just put together using a pocket chart poem that we wrote a few years back:

The pilgrims took a trip
across the big blue sea.
Riding on the Mayflower
America they did see.
The winter was so cold.
Then spring time warmed them up.
They listened as Squanto told
how to plant corn, fish, and hunt.
And when the crops were gathered
a Thanksgiving party did begin
with Pilgrims and Indians
giving thanks for all brought in!

We added to the poem to do a whole class retelling, but this is the original poem.  We thought it would be fun to put it into mini-book format as another way to help our first graders retell the Thanksgiving story.  The more they hear it, the better they will remember it.

You can find it HERE at our TPT store.

If you like doing pocket chart poems with your students, here are a couple FREEBIES of the pocket chart poem and the matching file-folder retell that we created last year for a free-time center.  Clip aft included in this pocket chart poem is from DJ Inkers and other sources.  We laminated the cards and a file folder and used velcro on the inside for students to put the poem back in order.

Thanksgiving Vocabulary Book

I know this is "off-season", but I decided to revamp our First Thanksgiving Vocabulary book using my Thanksgiving Doodles clip art.  Our old version of this book did not include pictures...and it took our first graders a LONG time to illustrate it.  A great activity, but we realized it was sort of a "repeat" once my own kids went through Kindergarten and they came home with a similar (but much shorter) book that they had to illustrate.  We wanted this to focus more on the vocabulary words and the story...and by having the illustrations on each page, we hope that we can reach the "reading" part of the lesson.

Focus words:
pilgrim, king, Mayflower, cabins, home, winter, spring, indian, Squanto, chores, Thanksgiving, corn.

We plan to use this during shared reading to read with our students and have them fill in the missing vocabulary words as we go.

You can purchase this book at our TPT store HERE.  And if you like the Thanksgiving Doodles clip art used in this book, check out my clip art collections at my Etsy Shop, my Teacher's Notebook clip art gallery, or at our TPT store.  Click on the links on the right side of our blog.

Thanksgiving Doodles Clip Art

Well, after making the Thanksgiving Riddles cards the other day, I realized I just didn't have the exact clip art images I wanted....so I started drawing my own!  And MY OH My did I have a lot of fun doing it!  Even my children were getting into drawing with me.  "What else do you need, Mom?"

Now I have exactly what I want and I can use it however I want!  I'm going out on a whim here and seeing if anybody else likes it.  Might just be the start of a new hobby of mine.  Sketching and creating clip art!  I think I've become obsessed lately with playing on the computer, blogging, revamping stuff.  That's pretty much what I did on my day off from school on Friday besides getting caught up on laundry.

Here's a couple FREEBIE images of a few of the Thanksgiving characters I drew.  The images are PNG so you should be able to layer in whatever you create.  You have permission to use these images however you want as long as you give me credit:  Clip Art by Carrie @ C&C Teach First.  It would be nice if you added our blog link, too!  Please don't resell my clip art as an "image".  Anything you create must be "nailed down" or flattened in PDF or JPEG form.  I would love to see my stuff in things you sell on Teachers Pay Teachers or Teachers Notebook.  And would LOVE to see our button on your blog, too!  Here are the TERMS of use from Google Docs.

Here's the Indian Chief, the first character I drew (this is actually version 2, I had a neck on the first chief that just didn't look right):

The grumpy King of England that wouldn't let the Pilgrims pray their own way:

I will be uploading the entire Thanksgiving Doodles set to our TPT store soon.  Please let me know what you think of my sketches!  Is it worth it to keep going...should I keep drawing?

Here's a thumbnail of as many images as I could fit nicely into a thumbnail.  There are a few more that I couldn't fit on here.  A smaller Mayflower that isn't so elaborate, a turkey my daughter, MaKenna, drew that she insisted I include (she also drew the teepee shape and I finished it), bubble words for "pilgrims" and "indians", and a cornstalk that is more ready to harvest-looking (yellowish orange).

Here is the Colored set:
