Las Posadas and Diwali Word Wall Cards

Getting stuff put together for little additions to a unit takes a lot of prep...but so much fun!  Sometimes I think we add to our own stress by updating, adding, and changing things to make it better.  But I guess that's being reflective and always trying to do better, right?

Here's a word wall card set for Las Posadas and Diwali that you can use with your little people.  Most of the clip art is from EduClips, one of my new favorite clip artists found on Teachers Pay Teachers.  Lots of cool sets that work great for making items for your classroom.  The page border that I used for the preview is from another one of my favorites:  Creative Clips by Krista Wallden.  These two ladies are SO talented.

Words included in this set are:

Diwali
clay lamp
fireworks
elephant
pray
bonfire
candle tray
India

Las Posadas
poinsettia
Mary
candle
pinata
Joseph
Mexico
Mexican boy
Mexican girl
parade
donkey
nativity

Ideas for using these cards:
  • Hang them in a pocket chart to introduce vocabulary during your study of Las Posadas and Diwali.
  • Display them to help student think of ideas around Las Posadas and Diwali
  • Let students use these word wall cards to correct their spelling after they've tried spelling these words on their own.  They can easily pull them from the pocket chart and take them to their seats.

Winter and Snow Word Wall Cards

Last year I made some Christmas and Holiday word wall cards and included some winter and snow themed words in that pack.  I didn't put the winter/snow theme words up before Christmas because I wanted to save them until our winter/snow theme.  As I was doing some winter and snow themed activities today, I thought of some additional words that I wanted to include on the world wall for our theme.  I quick whipped this up after school today.

Words included:
snowflake, igloo, snow drift, snowman, stocking hat, mittens, boots, scarf, snowball, sled, shovel, ice skates, snowboard, button, carrot, sticks, top hat, mug, ice cube, hot chocolate, iceberg, penguin, polar bear, arctic fox, eskimo, snow pants, coat, snowing, freezing, blizzard

You can find this word wall set HERE at my TPT store.

New Hanukkah and Kwanzaa Sets

So excited!  We are planning two new mini-units to replace some "fluffy" stuff in our Holiday theme in December to beef things up a bit:  one week on Hanukkah and one week on Kwanzaa.  These are two customs that I never really knew much about, so its been fun learning some of the vocabulary and what not. Yea, I know, here were are only in October and I'm already thinking about and planning ahead for December.  Only a teacher plans that far in advance, right?  If it eliminates the stress level, its the way to go for me.

My plan was to draw my own Hanukkah and Kwanzaa clip art and use that but I decided that I didn't feel like it and Melonheadz Illustrating already had it done, so why reinvent the wheel right now when I need it fast and don't want to stress myself out?!?  So I went to my favorite place to buy "school" stuff and purchased both the color and black-line bundles.  You'll have to check her sets out.  They are SUPER cute!

Here are a couple things I whipped up last night that we plan to use during this unit.

Post Office/Writing Theme Word Wall Cards

Today we kicked off our Post Office/Writing theme and started off by talking about some of the key vocabulary words at our word wall pocket chart.  Then we went on to a Mimio lesson I put together last week, where the class learned the parts of an envelope and a basic what you need to do in order to get something sent through the mail.  Today my firsties learned about a return address, mailing address, where the stamp goes and the postmark.  Tomorrow we plan to review the parts of an envelope by doing a cut and paste activity that is simialr to the drag and drop Mimio activity (see below) and then get them started on learning their own address and how to write that.

This set includes:
mailbox, mailman, mailbag, mail truck, letter, envelope, deliver, stamp, postmark, post office, mail drop, bar code, address, return address, mailing address, postcard, heading, greeting, body, closing, signature, write, send, sort

You can find it HERE at my TPT store.

The First Thanksgiving Word Wall Cards

I thought I posted these Thanksgiving Word Wall Cards last year when I made them, but while I was digging through our folder I realized I hadn't shared them or uploaded to our TPT store.

Fall, Pumpkins, Halloween Word Wall Cards

Looking ahead to our next theme, we decided we wanted to revamp our word wall cards so they weren't in D'Nealian.  We switched to Zaner Bloser this year and all our word wall cards are in D'Nealian, so that just means a little more work on our part.  I think it will pay off during journal writing time when we would have to have the first graders erase and make their letters the right size and shape and not copy the D'Nealian letters on our old cards.

This set includes word wall cards for your fall themes: fall, pumpkins, and Halloween.
  • Fall: acorn, squirrel, apple, leaf, leaves, scarecrow, crow, rake, sunflower, corn, apple pie,
  • Pumpkins: pumpkin, seed, sprout, plant, vine, yellow pumpkin, green pumpkin, leaf, pumpkin muffin, pumpkin pie, pumpkin patch, jack-o-lantern, blossom, carve, stem, weigh, measure, paint, pumpkin harvest
  • Halloween: witch, pirate, skeleton, vampire, astronaut, frankenstein, ghost, spider, bat, gravestone, haunted house, candy corn, treat bucket, treat bag, kettle, cowgirl, cowboy, trick or treating
You can find this set HERE at our TPT store.

Back to School Word Wall Cards

So back to school came and we didn't get these done for right away to use, but we can always use them in the next few weeks.  We usually put an environmental print bulletin board up at the beginning of the year, but found that this year we didn't really do anything with it, and would have utilized the new Back to School Word Wall cards I just made.  We LOVE our theme based word walls because it help kids think of things to write about during their journal writing time.  It's interactive and kids can take the card from the word wall pocket chart back to their seats and return it when they are done with it.  Each card has a picture clue so it helps those early readers and writers find the right card.

Here's a preview of the BTS Word Wall Cards:

Weather Word Wall Vocabulary Cards

We put together some basic word wall cards of the weather words that we use when teaching about weather.  Students love grabbing these word wall cards from the pocket chart during writing time.  I think I had posted previously about our Weather Words pocket chart.  Those word wall cards were in D'Nealian font...next year we are probably going away from this and wanted to have a set of cards that wouldn't confuse firsties with the tails and loops.  You can find them at out TPT store HERE

Christine is working on some Weather and Storm Facts Posters...be sure to stop back soon and check those out!

Farm Word Wall Vocabulary Cards

Our farm theme is called, "Farming:  How Food Gets From the Farm to Your Plate", and focuses on not just the animals that a farmer raises, but what the farmer does on the farm and how the food he/she grows gets from the farm to your dinner plate.  I revamped our card set and used my Farm Doodles clip art, along with some of KPM Doodles farm clip art and changed the font to a basic font.  Our other farm word cards are in D'Nealian font and I don't want to confuse our firsties next fall when we do the farm unit.  (I am seeing a lot of revamping in our future, since a lot of what we made was created witht he DN font.)

The words we have in our theme word wall pocket chart include the animals, plants, machines, and the basic products that come from the things that farmers "grow":

farmer, farm wife, tractor, combine, grain wagon, hay wagon, hay, corn stalk, corn field, soy bean, bean field, corn field, garden, cow, pig, horse, sheep, goat, chicken, rooster, hen, nest, chick, calf, ducking, turkey, cooked turkey, milking, riding, barn, hay, pitchfork, pail, harvest, pumpkin, apple, orchard, potato, carrot, corn, cat, dog, grain elevator, wheat, bread, eggs, bacon, ham, steak, hamburger, milk, cheese, yogrut, chicken leg

Space Word Wall Vocabulary Cards

I noticed someone on the TPT site requested space vocabulary cards and thought, "I could probably whip some of those up."  We do already have some word wall cards in our classroom that we found on the K-3 Teachers Resources site, but our school is switching reading/language arts series and PROBABLY going away from D'Nealian.  So making new ones would probably be good anyway.

Our students LOVE using the word wall pocket chart during their writing.  It helps give them "ideas" to write about and gives them a chance to SEE new words.  Our hope is that it will increase their reading vocabulary.  We noticed this year on our Gates word decoding tests, that words that we included on our word wall pocket chart for theme, student got right!  (Example:  During our Weather theme we had the word card for "lightning" and as a whole students actually got that question correct more than they have in the past.)  So if the focus is on vocabulary to increase comprehension, making these little word wall cards is way worth it!  And I love doing it anyway...

You can purchase this at our TPT store HERE.  The Space Doodles clip art used to created these word wall cards is also available for purchase:
