"Little Farmer on the Farm" Color Read Aloud Book

We are well into our farm theme and this week we are having the kids read about farm safety, as well as (hopefully) going on a trip to a local farmer's farm to learn about safety on the farm.  A few weeks ago I wrote a mini-book called "Little Farmer on the Farm".  Last night I put together the color 8.5 x 11 version to laminate and bind into a book to read aloud to the class.  You can find it HERE at our TPT store.

"Little Farmer on the Farm" mini-book

This week we started our farm theme with our first grade classes.  Our farm theme lasts about three weeks and we basically have three separate mini-themes within this theme:  1) The Farm, 2) Food Groups/Farm to Plate, 3) Farm Safety.  A few years ago, Christine and I wrote a song about Farm Safety that we know the kids enjoy singing.  Last year we created the Farm Riddles cards and this year I decided we should add a mini-book about Farm Safety.  I was sick of just using worksheets about farm safety and wanted our firsties to READ about farm safety.  So after school today I came up with this easy reader.

Here's the story:

The little farmer can play on the farm.
But the little farmer does not play in the barn.
The little farmer does not play in the corn.
The little farmer does not play by the combine.
The little farmer does not play in the wagon.
The little farmer does not play by the tractor.
The little farmer does not play by the cows.
The little farmer does not play by the pigs.
Where can the little farmer play?
But the little farmer can play by the scarecrow.
The little farmer can play in the yard.
The little farmer can play in the pumpkin patch.
The little farmer can pick apples.
The little farmer stays by the grown ups.

You can find this mini-book at our TPT store HERE:

Farm Word Wall Vocabulary Cards

Our farm theme is called, "Farming:  How Food Gets From the Farm to Your Plate", and focuses on not just the animals that a farmer raises, but what the farmer does on the farm and how the food he/she grows gets from the farm to your dinner plate.  I revamped our card set and used my Farm Doodles clip art, along with some of KPM Doodles farm clip art and changed the font to a basic font.  Our other farm word cards are in D'Nealian font and I don't want to confuse our firsties next fall when we do the farm unit.  (I am seeing a lot of revamping in our future, since a lot of what we made was created witht he DN font.)

The words we have in our theme word wall pocket chart include the animals, plants, machines, and the basic products that come from the things that farmers "grow":

farmer, farm wife, tractor, combine, grain wagon, hay wagon, hay, corn stalk, corn field, soy bean, bean field, corn field, garden, cow, pig, horse, sheep, goat, chicken, rooster, hen, nest, chick, calf, ducking, turkey, cooked turkey, milking, riding, barn, hay, pitchfork, pail, harvest, pumpkin, apple, orchard, potato, carrot, corn, cat, dog, grain elevator, wheat, bread, eggs, bacon, ham, steak, hamburger, milk, cheese, yogrut, chicken leg

You can purchase these Farm Vocabulary Cards at our TPT store HERE.

Farm Doodles Clip Art with FREEBIE

This weekend I have been updating and making some items for our Farm unit.  I know many teachers who do a farm unit in the spring...ours is done in the fall.  Yesterday I blogged about a Farm Safety pocket chart song that Christine and I wrote.  Again, I needed a combine and a wagon and I just didn't have that in any of the clip art that we've purchased.  So I got to drawing my own Farm collection.  My own two childrem thought my combine and tractor were pretty cool...but we live on a farm and they are pretty interested in John Deere equipment.

I just uploaded my Farm Doodles clip art packages to our TPT store.  All images are saved in PNG files so they are great for layering.
Here are thumbnails of the black and white and full color Farm Doodles collections:
