Woke on a Saturday morning a few weeks ago dreaming about a font I needed to make to use with some of my kiddos in my class, so that's what my Saturday morning consisted of. I've had so many first graders this year still drawing the letters and not using the correct path of motion when writing letters. So many of them start at the bottom and go up! Biggest handwriting rule ever: "You NEVER start at the bottom and go up when starting your letters!"
So here's what I came up with.
You can find it HERE at my TPT store.

Shape Box Letters for Words Font
Per request from a customer on Teachers Pay Teachers, I just finished creating this font. This font is a letter box font that has boxes around the entire word to show the "word shape". There are NO lines in between each letter like my Shape Box Letters Font. To complete the line around the entire word, there are a few extra keystrokes that you will need to insert. The key is included in the zip file.

Shape Box Spelling Patterns Font

How can I express how EXCITED I am about this font. I think only those teachers who teach systematic sequential phonics will be the ones who will "get it". I have wanted to create this font for YEARS! I created the Shape Boxes fonts a month or so ago and was pretty excited to have that done because it did the job, but I really wasn't happy with that. It wasn't exactly what I wanted. I REALLY wanted the dotted lines between the spelling patterns.
Years ago, Christine and I came up with a way to help segment words with an activity called Rainbow Words (our own version). We want students to be able to chunk the words apart using the different spelling patterns and types of syllables. We color code the spelling patterns and types of syllable to match our Phonics Wall that we have at the back of the room. It is divided into: Bossy-Rs (yellow), Vowels and Vowel Teams (green), Short Vowel Markers (red), Blends and Digraphs (blue), and Other Sounds/Spelling Patterns (purple). You can print off our Phonics Posters HERE for free through Google Docs. Students write the word in the shape boxes using this new font shapes, then trace the boxes with the different colors to match the phonics wall sections. The different colors give students a visual when they are trying to decode the word.
This font requires you to follow the key that is included to create the different multiple letter combinations. The regular alphabet letters would just use the regular letter keys (just like in the Shape Boxes Font we have for sale).

Shape Box Letters Font

The other day I blogged about a Shape Boxes font that we use with our first graders during Working With Words time. I decided to create another font called "Shape Box Letters" for people that wanted letters with a box around it. These would be great for creations for your word wall!

Shape Boxes Font

This is a font to make shape boxes for your young learners. This helps give children a visual clue about where the letters need to go on the lines. Do they go in to the basement, are they as tall as the ceiling, or are they just a short letter?
We have been doing "shape boxes" for YEARS in our first grade Working With Words curriculum as well as during our Writing time. It has helped students that need that visual cue to know what letter shape and letter might make a certain sound. We've used shape boxes as an accommodation on assessments for students on IEPs as well.
It was nice to find a font maker app that I could just create this font instead of making boxes in a drawing application, such as Publisher. In the past we have had boxes that go together with a dotted line in the middle to show bossy R vowels (ar, ir, ur, or, er) or vowel teams would go together (ai, ay...), but I couldn't figure out how to do that with a font...so this is our next best thing! And will be an awesome time-saver!

FREEBIE Carrie's Font by Clip Art by Carrie
Found an app for my iPad called iFontMaker today when I should have been working on curriculum planning for our new Journey's Reading program. But...its summer vacation and I don't feel like curriculum...I feel like being creative! So out came my first font and it was pretty fun! There are so many free fonts out there, so here's my first FREEBIE font for all of you of my very own handwriting.
And since I didn't know what to call it and its my own handwriting font, its called "Carrie's Font". Not too original...I know.
